Your Inner-Pack Rat

Last weekend, I spent two days going through stuff. I decided what I wanted to keep and what it was time to get rid of. I do this about twice a year and yet no matter how many times I swear I will buy fewer unnecessary things, there are always more things to get rid of biannually. I don't want to be a pack rat, but I'm afraid I am. I sometimes think that I want to have things in order to be prepared for the need, even if the need has not yet arisen. The result is I'm always accumulating. Am I alone in having this compulsion? I would really like to hear your thoughts and suggestions. How do you deal with your inner-pack rat?

I used to be a pack rat, too. Now, not anymore, and I don't know what made me change. But I think when you really want to buy something just because you think you may need them in the future, then, think about how hard the money you earned, or go shopping with a friend who can stop you spending your money on something unnecessary. I don't know, but I hope it will help.

I have to admit that you're better than I, Paul. I go through my stuff only once a year, maybe one time two years, I guess.

Paul,

After I had left my messages here, I browsed through my stuff, and I found that I still am a pack rat. I think I've changed just some, not all. SO, don't listen to a pack rat's advice, unless you think it helps you. But I think it is hard, sometimes we just cannot help buying things we don't really need.

Incidentally, I still think you are not as idle a man as I.

Very amusing. You thought you had changed, only to discover you hadn't! Perhaps that is equally true for all pack rats. We all get better, but only a little better. Thanks for the suggestions. I shall try them.

Sometimes I find it difficult to get rid of things because I think, "I'll likely use that one day." I sometimes think there should be a company that provides the service of getting rid of your junk when you're not home so it will be quicker and less painful.

I didn't quite follow all of that, but it sounds good to me. As long as I'm free, I'll be there. I'll get the details from Alvin.

Paul,

Since you feel painful when you get rid of your stuff, maybe next time when you want to buy anything which you think, "I'll likely use that one day", try to think about the pain you has ever suffered), perhaps it will stop you from buying them, or buying things only "when you really need them" instead.

I think the reason for you can not stop it is that you have enough money buy anthing you want.

Well, I don't think anyone would consider my junk "treasure." Funny though, your comment reminded me of summer yard sales in Canada. It was actually a lot of fun to check out yard sales. People would sell the most unusual things and once in a while, you'd find something amazing. My Mum used to collect fine china. She often found teacups that she'd buy in a yard sale for $0.25, only to discover they were really worth $10.00. It was also interesting to see other people's lives set out on tables in front of you. If you were lucky, you might even get a story or two. I wonder why yard sales never really took hold in Taiwan?

p.s. Tell your Dad I support him!

I think that is very sound advice. I actually started using this method just last week. I calculated how many hours I'd have to work to buy something. It seemed to work; I'm just not sure for how long it will continue to work.

Paul,

I understand that and I am glad it helps you. When the method doesn't work any longer, and you still want to get rid of the "rat", tell me,I'll get another mothed for you.
